The folks over at I Heart Bacon have come up with the Bacon Rating System. I frickin’ love this … so I’ll be using a slightly modified version here for the Bacon Geek reviews:

The Bacon
  • Brand: Crapmasters
  • Name: Uber Yummy Bacon
  • Cost per pound: $9.99
  • Value per pound: Low
  • Where purchased: Bob’s Market
  • Packaging: 32 oz
  • Cut: Medium
  • Preservatives: Nitrates
The Prep and Score
  • Cooking heat: Medium Low
  • Total cooking time: 12 min
  • Pork Flavor: 2

  • Salt: 3
  • Sugar: 3
  • Fat: 2
  • Texture: 2
  • Shrinkage: 3

Rating: ★★½☆☆

Ratings based on Bacon Rating System

Brand: The manufacturer of the product.
Name: This specific product name.
Cost per pound: Most of the reviews will be done from Portland, OR so this price will be related to costs in Oregon. If shipping cost is involved, this will be factored into the overall cost per pound.
Value per pound: Is this bacon a good value for what you pay for it? This is a big deal for most people as you want to get the best bacon for the price. This is entirely subjective on the part of the reviewer but we’ll do our best to be honest here.
Where purchased: Store that product was purchased from. Some of these will be on-line.
Packaging: What is the packaging like and what’s the size.
Cut: Thick, thin, etc.
Preservatives: A list of preservatives used in curing the product.
Cooking heat:
Total cooking time: Total time to cook product.

We’re doing a 1 – 5 rating where 1 is low/bad/not enough/etc.

Pork Flavor: not enough << 1 2 3 4 5 >> too much
Smoke: not enough << 1 2 3 4 5 >> too much
Salt: not enough << 1 2 3 4 5 >> too much
Sugar: not enough << 1 2 3 4 5 >> too much
Fat: not enough << 1 2 3 4 5 >> too much
Texture: too chewy << 1 2 3 4 5 >> too crisp
Shrinkage: a lot << 1 2 3 4 5 >> a little

This will be a rating based on the bacon ratings above and shown in a star-rating format. We take the categories above, add up their scores and divide by seven. More stars the better hoping for the perfect “5 star” rating.

Any details that might be provided above and beyond the basic ratings.

This absolutely needs to be marked up in microformats. hReview should get most (if not all) the way there.

So agreed. Need to make a Wordpress module that will do the little “rating” window anyways … might as well make it microformat happy.

Throughout this awesome scheme of things you’ll get an A just for hard work. Where you misplaced me personally ended up being in the details. You know, people say, the devil is in the details… And that could not be more accurate at this point. Having said that, let me say to you exactly what did work. Your writing is certainly incredibly engaging which is possibly why I am making an effort to opine. I do not really make it a regular habit of doing that. 2nd, while I can easily notice a leaps in logic you make, I am not certain of just how you appear to unite your points which make the conclusion. For now I shall yield to your point but trust in the near future you connect the facts better.
